At the occasion of the AFTES 2021 congress, a training session on "Excavation control and instabilities in conventional excavation methods" was held and gathered 32 participants.
The session was opened by the President of AFTES, Michel Deffayet who welcomed participants to the training. This was followed by a presentation from Robert Galler on 'The fundamentals of the conventional method and its limitations '. As always, Robert Galler's presentation was an excellent and insightful introduction to the subject and included some enthralling videos which had the audience captivated. This was followed by a presentation on Design and instability mechanisms by François Laigle which included a wealth of information and useful equations.
After an excellent lunch where participants and lecturers mingled, the afternoon session kicked off with a look at 'Lessons learnt from an engineer's point of view' given by Jacques Robert and then 'Lessons learnt from a companies point of view' by Jean Guillaume. The session finished with a presentation on 'Emergency methods in difficult cases" given by Marc Panet.
