Biography: 

Pierre SCHMITZ is a Civil engineer in Electro-Mechanic and has a Diploma of Specialized Studies in Public administration. During 17 years, he was technical adviser at the Belgian Co-operation in Morocco, Rwanda and Ivory Coast. He was then private consultant near the Government of Ivory Coast for energy matters, mainly for World Bank projects.

In 1993 he started as Engineer in the Administration of Equipment and Transport of the Brussels Region. Actually he is head of the "European and International relations" department in the General directorate of Brussels Mobility and is in charge of the European R&D projects related to road tunnels safety and telematics applied to urban transport.

He has represented Belgium in the PIARC Road Tunnel Committee from 1996 to 2003, was French secretary of this committee from 2004 to 2007 and president from 2008 to 2011. He is the leader of the Working Group "Knowledge management" in charge of the PIARC Road Tunnel Manual electronic encyclopaedia and training courses organized in cooperation with ITA.
