Research focused on field observations and analyses of ground behavior in slopes, excavations, deep and shallow caverns and tunnels in rock and soil; assessment and control of tunnel- and excavation-induced ground movements and building damage, and development of distortion-damage criteria.
Geotechnical Consultant: Recent projects include:
- LIRR East Side Access Project: siting and initial design recommendations for rock caverns beneath Grand Central Terminal, New York;
- (New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction: construction of No. 7 line tunnels and station caverns.
- THE Partnership: design of Trans-Hudson tunnels in soil and station caverns in rock.
- Toronto Transit Commission: ground control and monitoring for EPB tunneling beneath structure on Northern Tunnels, Spadina Line.
Member Tunnel Advisory Panel, LA Metro: subway planning, design and construction; Consultant to Seattle Tunnel Partners Joint Venture on Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Project for ground monitoring and control during tunneling; Member Tunnel Review Panel, DCWater, for design of Blue Plains, Anacostia River, and Northeast Boundary tunnel projects.
