    PRESIDENT´S ADDRESS

ITACET Foundation President, eng. Abdullah Al-Mogbel

Last January, I informed you that the Foundation decided to create an Award for granting annually an Institution/Organization/person.. who has contributed significantly to the activities of the Foundation.

The first Award will be presented during the opening of the 2014 World Tunnelling Congress in Iguacu (Brazil); the Council will decide the name of the winner during its next meeting January 2014.

The Council also decided to sponsor two students to the ITA-endorsed postgraduate Master Courses; the choice was to sponsor a student from Palestine in Torino and a student from Ivory Coast in Lyon.

Also, I recommend you to visit the new pages of the Foundation’ website concerning the realized events and the new alumni of the participants to the events the Foundation organized under; do not hesitate to react!

 

   ALUMNI

Soon, the participants of our training sessions will be able to join our alumni group.

The Foundation is looking to join a Social Network and you will be able to keep in touch through it.

   Seminar in Zagreb

Zagreb, Croatia 03 December 2013 Urban Underground Space Use

50 participants registered for the one day training session, co- organized by the Croatian Tunnelling Association and the ITACET Foundation.

The objective of this course was to provide a broad introduction to the use of underground space in urban areas and the benefits of planning for such use. 

The Foundation delegated two lecturers, specialized in this field, namely (in the order of their intervention) Mr. Han Admiraal (Enprodes - NL) and Antonia Cornaro (Amberg engineering - CH) . The participant were welcomed by the President of ITA Croatia, M. Davorin Kolic.

The lecturers introduced some elements of theoretical understanding of the subject and reviewed several case studies. The lectures were followed by lively discussion between the lecturers and the participants.

IMMERSED TUNNELS - 08-09 November 2013

The seminar was hosted by CBT, The Brazilian Tunnelling Association. Its President, Mr. Hugo Rocha, welcomed the 110 participants and opened the seminar. This welcoming speech was followed by an overview on immersed tunnels in Brazil given by Tarcísio Barreto Celestino, chairman of the organizing committee of the WTC 2014.

For this seminar, four renowned experts on immersed tunnels were delegated by the Foundation to lecture; namely, and in the order of their intervention, Messrs. Jonathan Baber, Michael Tonnesen, Hans De Wit and Christian Ingerslev.

The seminar's lectures gave insight on four topics, Overview on Immersed Tunnels, Sizing and Designing the Structure, Construction, Afloat and Geotechnical, Risk Management, Operation and Maintenance

Several practical case studies were also reviewed. Lively open discussion between the attendees and the lecturers concluded each day of the seminar.

Both, the attendees and the lecturers gave a very positive feedback on the seminar.

   SEMINAR IN Singapore

 

11-12 July 2013 Underground Space Facilities: Layout, Design and Operational Issues

Press release: The purpose of this course was to aid future owners and designers of underground spaces to create well-planned, attractive and functional underground facilities that are safe, secure and cost-effective in terms of life cycle performance.

50 Participants attended the two-day seminar hosted by the Nanyang Center for Underground Space (NCUS) of the Nanyang University of Singapore.

An introduction was given by Professor Zhiye ZHAO, Professor, Nanyang Technological University

The Foundation delegated two lecturers, Messr. Ray Sterling, from Louisiana Tech University USA, and Jian Zhao from EPFL, Switzerland. Together, they gave 14 lectures during the two day of the training session. An introduction to the seminar and a short abstract of the lectures is available in the program of the event >>

This particular course was designed to have a half-day focus on the underground space development activities in Singapore. This "Focus on Singapore" was introduced by Dr. Yingxin ZHOU from Nanyang University. It includes a presentation on a conceptual master planning for underground space use in the Nanyang Technological University campus as well as discussion of recent underground space use projects in Singapore and ongoing national planning and feasibility study efforts.
